The cast of Goosebumps: The Disappearance revealed whether they watched the first season — or spoke to the show’s original stars — after the anthology revamp.
In an exclusive interview with Us every week, Ana Ortiz, Elijah M. Cooper, Galilea La Salvia, Francesca Noel, Stony Blyden, Sam McCarthy And Jayden Bartels discussed how they prepared to join a series that previously had a different cast and story.
“I think because of its anthological nature, it’s natural to keep it as new as possible,” Blyden, 28, who plays Trey, said of not dwelling too much on what came before. “But it was a fantastic season.”
Cooper, for his part, was a big fan of Goosebumpsadding: “It was truly a superb watch. I also watched the first season several times. It was legitimately iconic.
La Salvia, 21, who brings Frankie to life, couldn’t help but agree. “I actually watched season 1 and I remember us talking about it as soon as we got on set,” she recalls. “As we would say, ‘Did you see the cliffhanger?’ » Did you see that? Did you see this? It was really fun.
The horror series originally premiered in October 2023 and was inspired by RL Stine‘popular horror novels. Goosebumps was pitched as a show that followed five teenagers who had to work together after accidentally releasing supernatural forces into their small town. While trying to capture evil spirits, the group revealed secrets from their parents’ past.
Goosebumps originally played Isa Briones, Ana Yi Puig, Zack Morris, Miles McKenna And Will the price be as protagonists of the show. However, when the series was renewed four months later, Disney confirmed that there would be a casting and story shakeup. Season 2 centers on twins sent to spend a summer in Brooklyn with their divorced father (David Schwimmer) whose tests on plants take a sinister turn.
“I’m someone who usually approaches things with a fresh perspective,” noted Noel, who plays Alex. “I saw the pilot of that. But I wanted to approach this subject differently because it’s a totally different world, and New York is very special. And one of the great things about Goosebumps there are so many books. So there are so many stories that we could continue to tell for 20 seasons. »
Ortiz had a similar experience where she “watched the first season” but “did not speak to any of the actors” from these episodes. Then there’s Bartels, who researched Season 1 before taking on the role of Cece.
“I would definitely say I wanted to experience the vibe and gain that knowledge. But I think it was definitely a new table in another way too. It’s the same show, but I really wanted my character and my performance to do what I thought was authentic and authentic,” she explained to We. “We definitely took inspiration from the vibe of the first season, but it’s a new story and a lot of things are different. But it’s still creepy and scary.
McCarthy agreed with Bartels’ view, adding: “[Season 1] was almost separate from the work I was doing.
The change was not only felt in front of the camera, but also behind it. Executive producers Rob Letterman And Hillary Winston said We on the challenges that I came from scratch in the same universe.
“When we moved to an anthology, it really fit what Goosebumps is. So if you’re a fan of the books, you know that RL Stine doesn’t write happily ever after at the end of the books. In fact, he goes out of his way not to do that,” Letterman noted. “He leaves it with a cliffhanger or a twist. So when we watched the end of season 1, it kind of felt like the perfect creepy ending to what this story was about.
However, they do not exclude A Goosebumps “multiverse”. There was also an effort to keep some aspects similar for returning viewers.
“For season 2, we wanted to swing the pendulum and do something different. But we also wanted fans of the first season to feel comfortable in the storytelling model. That’s how we kept this structure of mystery that we have to unveil,” Letterman continued. “Something happened 30 years ago, and every character you meet has their own monster story and their paths cross, and then halfway through the season they realize it’s all connected to what happened past in the past.”
He concluded: “We liked this framing device but we wanted to tell something totally new and fresh. It’s a good balance of maintaining the familiarity of the Goosebumps TV series while still doing it in anthology form.
Goosebumps is currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
