Here’s what Martin Luther King III said at Donald Trump’s inauguration
Sunday January 19 NBC News released an exclusive 31-minute interview with King III. About two minutes into the interview, King III was asked to share what he thought his father would think about the current state of the country.
“So even I, as a son, can only speculate,” King III explained. “None of us would really know [but] what I can say is…we saw a lot of chaos. Some of them are constructive. Some of them are destructive. I think Dad would always wonder how to create constructive engagement, how to build the beloved community?
King III explained that his father would be “quite disappointed” that the country was where it is. However, he doesn’t think his father would be “surprised.” Additionally, the civil rights leader’s son explained that when tragedy strikes the nation, individuals come together. Once it’s over, everyone “goes back to their corner.” However, he would like to see unity and community continue beyond the tragedy.
By NBCNew YorkElsewhere during the interview, King III was asked to share what he would pay attention to during Trump’s inauguration speech.
“He said he wanted to create [sense] of unity,” King III said, referring to Trump. “Now that means you have to engage with everyone. If you truly want to bring the nation together to be the manifestation of what we call ourselves…we are not reflecting the ‘United States of America’ right now…”

Monday January 19 NBC News released an exclusive video interview with Bernice King. During the conversation, she talked about Trump’s inauguration taking place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“It’s wonderful that this is happening on King’s Day, the inauguration, because it reminds us of King,” she said. “That brings us back to King. He said: “When we move forward, we must do so in the spirit of King. »
Additionally, for those feeling “defeated” by Trump’s return to power, King also shared some advice.
“We need to develop a strategy. We missed the strategy. We miss the spirit of Dr. King,” she said. “The spirit of Dr. King is nonviolence. And non-violence is not just a posture, it is a state of mind. For us, we define it as a love-centered way of thinking, speaking, acting and engaging that leads to personal, cultural and societal transformation.
