Whether you thought the superhero bubble broke out or notIt is just to say that very little in terms of gender can really be considered as “novel” or “push of limits” … but leave it “Harley Quinn”, the program animated on some of the most nasty bad guys DC, continue to face this trend. Like his title character, the arch of the streaming series was hardly conventional. Originally beginner in 2019 on an autonomous service forgotten long known as DC Universe (it was not very impressive, As our examination at the time turned out), the series survived this move to what was known at the time under the name of HBO Max before finally finding a house on Max. Now, taking place for five seasons for five, “Harley Quinn” should take its biggest and daring swing to date. And, honestly, it should do a lot No more pop culture noise than it is currently.
For viewers who still catch up, you don’t even need to dig very deeply to understand the appeal of “Harley Quinn”. Take the casting of ridiculously stacked voice of the show, led by a perfect Kaley Cuoco for the height like Harley and including the tastes of Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, and many others putting unique tours well used archetypes. Then there is the mentality of “not taking prisoners” which even puts “Deadpool” and its buffoonery with shame, by placing everyone from Zack Snyder to James Gunn himself in his target views. But even beyond all this, the irreverent and rude villain of the heart of the series could even compete with his live counterpart (with all the respect I owe to Margot Robbie and to the various filmmakers with whom she worked to bring her Harley Quinn version in life). Beginning the first season mired in a toxic and co -pesting relationship with the abusive joker (Tudyk), his trip led to The rare property with the courage to adapt your torrid romance with another supervillain poison Ivy (Bell).
With season 5 in first last January and not only by continuing to click on all cylinders, but also to shake the status quo by completely moving the action of Gotham City, it is time that we have given “Harley Quinn” and Its (relatively) under the -radar joined the flowers which they deserve so richly.
Harley Quinn likes DC … even if he satire
Why does “Harley Quinn” work so well while so many other superhero properties in recent years have failed? This is a question that I have been asking myself since I was sucked in this unique little corner of the DC franchise. I have never watched a second of “Peacemaker”, ” I maintain a good dose of skepticism regarding “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” by MarvelAnd if James Gunn’s “Superman” does not flourish, well, that rolled up. What is impatiently left, beyond the “The Batman” of Matt Reeves, the time perpetually? And yet, I always come back to “Harley Quinn”, from all things, year after year.
It is certainly not because this scenario rich in crossover puts the whole of the DC universe at hand, allowing a given episode to follow the exploits of a loser like Kite-Man (Matt Oberg), devote Huge pieces of a special Valentine’s Day to a super-corn banes (James Adomian), or focus on the ivy of poison which takes up the Lex Luthor Lex Legion (Esposito). After all, Despite the promise of the trailer “Superman”I only feel pure exhaustion to the idea that Gunn launches several characters on the CC side that I do not care – something that I have never lived by looking at “Harley Quinn” draw several characters from his hat . He can’t just be the idea that the means of The animation lends itself so naturally to the world of superheroes and their gallery of thugs, as definitely proved the “Spider-Verse” filmsAlthough it certainly helps! Indeed, “Harley Quinn” is so in line with his animation style that he can bend the limits of hyper-violent action and laughs that make an equal measure, finding punchlines and creative sensations that his live action brothers simply cannot compete with it.
No, the secret sauce of “Harley Quinn” is the fact that the series carries its love for DC on its sleeve … even if it viciously satiates the franchise with an inch of his life. The dysfunctional incapacity of the battle of bats and the inability of Bruce Wayne (Diedrich Bader) to overcome his childhood trauma are a frequent target of jokes, just like the ambitions of actor of Clayface (Tudyk) and the King Shark royal responsibilities (Funches). At each stage of the path, however, these wacky detours only reinforce what makes these characters so kind in the first place – a magic tip that few other rivals have ever succeeded.
Harley Quinn season 5 is as hilarious, violent and sincere as never
Nowhere “Harley Quinn” has a better balance between his great ambitions than in season 5. Only three episodes were broadcast at the time of the writing of the present. Schumacker and Dean Lorey have not lost a single step. Although also clear and full of mind, the series continues to find the perfect ground between ruthless satire and a beating heart.
In fact, the first three episodes are an appropriate showcase for all that this series is capable of. The first of season 5, entitled “The Big Aprilot”, is up to the media threw by removing Harley and Ivy from the familiar borders of Gotham City and throwing them into the much more glamorous Metropolis city – a risky decision which results in real consequences and changes. Using the cliché of a long -term couple that fell into a rut like a springboard, a Jamière episode editor Borak and director Diana Huh effortlessly weave comics with authentic emotions. In episode 2, the writer credited Leslie Schapira and director Christina Manrique are somehow attacking two very different stories A and B: one involving Harley Quinn signed up for babysitting for spawn Uncontrollable from King Shark, and another much darker intrigue focused on an ex -murdered ex -Ivy d’Ivoy. Episode 3 then inspires the villain revealed to be “the floronic man” (expressed by John Slattery) and considerably increases the action of superheroes, freeing psychedelic mental battles and chainsaw strike sequences that outdo a lot of his peers. And it’s with teasing involving whip characters like Red X (Most likely Dick Grayson by Harvey Guillin), Braniac (Stephen Fry), and even more to come.
Taken as a whole (complete disclosure: I looked in advance and I can confirm that the episodes to come are just as large), “Harley Quinn” season 5, we take a baseball bat at our head and we obliges to assess a level of quality that we can no longer hold for granted. There are superhero shows, then there are superheroes that are really worth our time and our investment. “Harley Quinn” is part of this last category, and we hope there will be many more seasons of blood, sex and shamelessly coming to come.
New episodes of season 5 of “Harley Quinn” on Max every Thursday.
