I remember exactly where I was on December 31, 1999: I was with five other friends with a friend, playing Mario MAP 64 And South Park: the chief’s luv hutAnd we were not too concerned about the end of the world, but at the same time, we all pushed a sigh of relief at 12:01 p.m. on January 1, 2000, when nothing happened. For months, the media had the Y2K hypothesis, a critical computer error which could, allegedly, destroy all existing technologies. Sophomoric horror comedy Y2k Imagine what could have happened if, instead, technology was trying to kill people, and although it bombed in theaters, it is now one of the hottest films in Max.

A killing house party

Y2k is a nostalgic film perfectly targeted for all the aged 37 to 48 years old with non-stop references at the turn of the century, including a Tamogotchi killer, a time-soundtrack in time and an incredible cameo that you should not go out and spoil yourself for yourself. In fact, the film is at its best just after midnight when three non -cool friends, Danny (Julian Dennison), Eli (Jaedan Martell) and Garrett (the writer / director of the film, Kyle Mooney), are at a high school party. Suddenly, technology is trying to kill the children, a video recorder disparages the head of a girl, in tamogotchi, until, ultimately, a bizarre collection of technology called the screenshyer Straight up stabbing people.

The boys are joined by Farkas (Foreign things’ Eduardo Franco) and Eli’s crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler), while they are looking for refuge at school and try to save their city from the deadly virus. Physically grazing in size over the film, fusion begins to take control of city dwellers, transforming the invisible threat of a virus into a standard massive film monster. As the real computer problem, Y2k is much more interesting in the abstract, before it turns into a standard horror film, because the massacre at the start of the house feast is one of the best scenes of horror film of the decade, and the rest of the film is … there.

Not a fairly funny comedy, not a frightening enough horror

Y2k Almost combines a teenage comedy of the 2000s in the 2000s with a horror comedy, but the two halves of the film, like Pineapple pizzadoes not have good taste together. It is not as funny as it could be a direct comedy, and not as dark or inventive as it could be a pure horror film, but it has great comic rhythms, and some creative dead, but only one where they combine perfectly to create a moment so shocking and unexpected, it will provide a reaction of anyone. It is disjointed, ill -punctuated and lacking the brand, but in a few years it will be a horror success.

When it was in theaters, and it was in theaters, it is not a streaming Original film, but as no one went to see him, you are forgiven. Y2k won $ 4 million despite the budget of the film fairly modest of $ 15 million; It was a substantial flop and a disappointment when he made his debut on December 6, 2024. As his current success shows, perhaps going to theaters was a mistake, but it is a success in streaming.

Y2K is a future

For all that Y2k It is bad, the film compensates with enthusiasm and the infectious joy which comes only from the first major film of a director. Kyle Mooney always tries to find her voice and style, but at least he has a huge swing with this horror comedy mashup and does not play it safely for the film. In a few years, the cheesy dialogue and nostalgia for the 2000s will make it successful at a generation that does not remember a world without mobile phones and has never experienced Woodstock 1999

Y2k is now streaming on max.
