You are not going to believe this, but fans of an original beloved series again panic on the modifications made to an adaptation to come. No, I’m not talking The players and their complicated relationship with season 2 of “The Last of Us” (Although there are certainly a lot from where it comes from in the coming weeks). This time, the day speech revolves around the second season of the series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” from Netflix and a somewhat unexpected version of a favorite character of fans to present: The Earthbender Toph.

Nickelodeon’s original cartoon fans know that the Aang gang was not finished until Book 2 of the series introduced Toph Beifong, the incredibly stubborn and initially off -putting hero expressed by actor Michaela Jill Murphy. Before birth but endowed with extraordinarily powerful capacities, she quickly won the fans and has even become a key mentor for Airbender Aang through a mixture of his tenacity and her failed boy charms. It is this last part, however, which apparently arouses the controversy nest of a Hornet surrounding the next episode of the live show. Now played by the young actor Miya Cech, our new Toph will apparently feel a little different from the characters that viewers know … and “avatar” fans respond almost exactly how you expect them to react. (Look no further than the indignant answers to the post of direct on xThe social media site formerly known as Twitter.)

Speaking Direct (via Io9) On the red carpet of his new film “Marshmallow”, Cech talked about his representation of the character. Not only will she be a little older than her animated counterpart, slightly 12 years old to more closely reflect the actor (who is currently 18 years old), but she will also be a little more in contact with her own femininity. As Cech explained:
“My version of Toph will be a little older and a little more feminine. I feel like I want to work in a very humanizing space for her because, you know, she was a comic.”
This is not the first change the avatar live: the last Airbender made from the original … and it will not be the last
I’m sure the passionate fans base will react very Normally, at the last development “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. Having examined the first season of the Netflix program for / filmI am already in the file as being rather disappointed with this adaptation. Skeptics probably point to The representation of Sokka (Ian Ousley), who made waves by removing the character penchant for misogyny Directed towards his sister Katara (Kiawentiio) and depriving him of a fairly poignant arc involving growth and maturity. That said, however, I can’t help but think that this is a case where we are allowed to extend a certain benefit of doubt to the distribution and the team of the second season to come.

Is this another instance of the program attenuating another important character trait, or something much less controversial? Yes, the original Toph was represented as a figure of a grave boy par excellence in the Nickelodeon show. Covering her emotional insecurity under a thick layer of snark, sarcasm and a personality coded by an outdoor male, she caused all kinds of conflicts with Aang, Sokka (expressed by Jack Denena), and in particular Katara (Mae Whitman). But it should be noted that the original series addressed this subject even in the popular episode “Tales of Ba Sing Sing”, unpacking the complex feelings of Toph concerning its feminine side with nuance and grace. In addition, Cech continues by revealing that she actually talked to the original voice actor Michaela Jill Murphy and ended up on the same page:

“I met Michaela who plays Toph’s voice, and I have the impression that we have both a very similar socket in terms of process.”
Something tells me that it will end up being a lot of speeches for what is equivalent to very little real controversy. Remember where you heard this first when season 2 finally arrives. No release date has been announced for the moment, however Netflix has already confirmed “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will take place for two more seasons.
