Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Is Finally Taking The Franchise Somewhere New

It has been more than five years since we had a “Star Wars” film in theaters, which is quite surprising since Disney promised once an entry each year of the legendary franchise after its purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. In any case, the next era of a galaxy far, far on the big screen takes shape. We have known for some time that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” by Jon Favreau would arrive in 2026. As for what comes after? This honor goes to the new “Star Wars: Starfighter” by director Shawn Levy (“Deadpool & Wolverine”).

Although it has already been revealed that Levy was working on a film “Star Wars” with Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”, “Blade Runner 2049”) attached to Star, he was finally confirmed, title and everything, during the celebration of Star Wars in Japan. While the details of the plot remain firmly under the Wraps, the film should now officially arrive in May 2027 and will take place about five years After the events of “The Rise of Skywalker” of 2019. Gosling will also play a new character.

“You may have had a bit of a glimpse,” Levy teased during a Interview with Star Wars Celebration. He was referring to a new spacecraft that was previewed during the presentation, but he also clearly indicated that “new” is the keyword here. As the filmmaker said:

“The film is a new adventure. These are new characters, it takes place in a new period after the battle of Exegol, after” Episode IX “. There are so many opportunities to tell a story of” Star Wars “which has all the heart, the action, and the pleasure of” Star Wars “, but to do it in a new and original way.

“New” was the word that takes place enormously, which will probably be a new welcome to a large number of fans. To this end, the fans present became monkeys ** after Levy spoke of the novelty of this film.

It’s time for Star Wars to let the past die, and Starfighter can do it

“We are not in development; we are in pre-production. We shoot,” said Levy the crowd of celebrations, the shooting that was to start in the fall. In other words, this happens. This will not become another One of the many “Star Wars” films that was canceled during the Disney era of Lucasfilm.

More importantly than simply going through the finish line (or the starting line, really) is the fact that Disney is finally, apparently allowing “Star Wars” to pass to a really new territory, especially with regard to films. In the aftermath of the conflicting nature of the Trilogy Suite, it is logical that the studio wants to play things safe with something like “the Mandalorian and the Grogu”. It is also logical that Disney and Lucasfilm are Bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey for a film on the reconstruction of the Jedi Order.

But what Levy and Gosling promise here are new characters and a new story that takes place in a previously unexplored game of the “Star Wars” chronology. It’s like that, so to speak. Indeed, it seems that the whole Disney era of “Star Wars” to this point was anchored to Skywalkers or to fill the gaps in the established chronology. This is the first film since prequal to really offer something new. But even on this front, Levy clearly indicated that he and his collaborators waded in unexplored waters:

“There is obviously a relationship between these stories and the public, but we have spent our lives in this audience, and we know how significant it is. But as Ryan said, it is a big galaxy. It is a big galaxy there, and it seems that there is an opportunity to make a film which is not a prequel, which is not an addendum, and which gives us completely new.”

Jonathan Tropper (“The Adam Project”) wrote the script for the film but, once again, the details of the intrigue remain completely elusive. Even thus, the simple existence of something of this original in the “Star Wars” galaxy is refreshing.

Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy say good things about Star Wars

Even something as acclaimed as “Andor” fills the gaps left by “Rogue One”, a film that was itself, filling some shortcomings on the path of success. These are acclaimed projects, but not really 100% new. The closest we have reached this in recent years has been “Skeleton Crew” on Disney +. It seems that Disney had more tolerance to test the waters with the originality on the small screen. But “Star Wars” really circulates in films and the need for originality there, for new characters who can give way to new stories, is undeniable. Who knows? Maybe we will have something original with Simon Kinberg’s “Star Wars” trilogy. It is simply in development. We are talking about something that really happens here.

“Be here and see you all [makes it] More inspiring to do so, “said Gosling during the interview.” There is so much creativity and imagination in this room and there is so much love. It is an excellent reminder of the quantity of films that films can mean for us, in particular how these films mean for us. Strength is a mysterious thing, but, as I am here, strength is the fans. All we can hope for is: “that fans are with us”. “”

Gosling also wore a hat with the famous Han Solo line, “never tells me the chances”. Gosling explained that the sentence acts in a way as Levy’s director by making their film. Levy followed this, adding:

“You take” Star Wars “, you take something that is as beloved, it’s intimidating. You are afraid, you are nervous, you want to do things. But we have the feeling that with this story, with this collaboration, we can do it.”

Levy and Gosling say good things. It looks like Lucasfilm is trying to do the right thing. We can only hope that everything will meet satisfactorily. But as Jyn Erso could say, “we have hope. The rebellions are built on hope.” Perhaps a good original film can also be built on hope.

“Star Wars: Starfighter” should be released on theaters on May 28, 2027.
