In The second season of “The Last of Us” – The HBO adaptation of the Naughty Dog beloved video game series – Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann present characters who don’t do it appear in the game, including Gail, a therapist living in Jackson’s protected fortress, Wyoming who is played by the winner of Emmy Catherine O’Hara. Anyone who knows the work of Catherine O’hara knows that, to say it lightly, she is not known for her dramatic roles! It is not a blow on O’Hara, a talented actress supernaturally who made her debut on “Second City Television” and increased in importance in the classic comedies of Christopher Guest like “Waiting For Guffman” and “Best in Show”. What’s going on in the scene between Gail and Joel?
The Gail scene in “Future Days” is quite important in that it exposes the fact that Joel, years after the events of the final of season 1, is always haunted by his decision to kill a group of rebellious fireflies – and perhaps prevent a remedy for the cordyceps virus ravaging the world – to save her daughter of substitution Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Although it was obviously not totally From the level with Gail in that she indicates that she does not know why there is such an important corner between him and Ellie, Joel works on serious stuff, and the typically private man turns to a therapist to get help.

We also learn that there is a corner between Gail and Joel, and for a good reason. Gail may not be in the game, but I have already mentioned that her canonical husband Eugene is seen in photos in the game and is discussed by other characters … and in her scene with Joel, we learn that Eugen is dead. Gail, who drinks whiskey early during the day and during his session with Joel, notices that it is her birthday – especially her first birthday without her husband of more than four decades. Gail also reveals something surprising: Joel killed Eugene. Why and how it happened has not yet been revealed, but I hope that we will learn more about Eugene’s death in the hands of Joel when season 2 continues.
