We are quite spoiled these days with good and excellent video games that get adaptations also or even better in movies and television series.
First season of Prime Video by To fall was very fun that felt just online with the tone and vision of his source equipment, and HBO The last of us was a Gargantusen success both creatively and everything that matters to Warner data demons.
But it took a long time for video game adaptations to find their foot. Because in the past, they were often poor or downright terrible. Not you, however, my sweet Kombat MortelI love you. Mwah.
Whatever their quality, these films have been considered punchlines for a very long time.
And although there have been more obscure more previous adaptations in which we could dive into a later video if you are all interested, let us know in the comments, a major theatrical version launched the craze of the Adaptation of video games, you guessed it, faithful viewers, our favorite decade, the 90s.

It was Super Mario Bros.’s film, before one of the others, your children watched a hundred times officially obtained this title.
Super Mario Bros. Released in 1993 and if you were good age, it was one of the biggest events in your whole year. And we remember especially now as a huge failure.
And even while I write this, you cannot broadcast Super Mario Bros. on streaming Service in the United States.
Why was this film such a historic and unforgettable disaster of a concept, production and a box office outing? And how did he manage to become a classic beloved cult?
How Super Mario Bros. (1993) occurred

Our story does not start in the kingdom of mushrooms. First of all, we have to leave the city of Gotham, preferably via a green pipe.
After the unprecedented success of Batman In 1989, the studios began productions with larger green, more daring and banks in order to find their own franchise blockbuster.
Attempts to do Super Mario Bros. had developed in the 80s, but ultimately solidified in the early 90s when Nintendo concluded an agreement with Lightmotive, a small British studio which allowed a surprising amount of creative freedom.
This is because, according to producer Roland Joffé, the president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, estimated that the Mario brand was strong enough to resist any iteration of the American film, and it was open to the very different socket of the film.
And before opening this egg, we have to take a detour for …

Back in the Old Hollywood Days, if there was a huge production in town, everyone thought it was a success, you would see large and small studios to run as soon as possible.
This is how James Cameron The abyss gave us Deep star six,, Leviathan, And the favorite MST3K, Lords of Depths.
The same attempt occurred when the studios knew Dino-mania, or as we the Oldheads call it, Prehysteria!was going to sweep the world in 1993 with the release of Jurassic.
And in the middle of this cover of Carnosaurus,, We are back: the story of a dinosaurAnd Rex: the story of a dinosauralso gave birth to the plot for Super Mario Bros.in the hope of using a tenuous connection to Super Mario worldDinosaur Terre to run away with the pursuit of dino dollars in 1993.
Roland Joffé used Maximum margin The creators Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel to direct and direct the creative vision of the film, and the idea that they all found took the cartoon fantasy of the games and reinterpreted it in an alternative dystopia of dark fictional fiction Where dinosaurs have evolved in the prominent science fiction sensitive on the planet.
Yeah, it’s going to become weird.
A dark science fiction

This dark plug, more nervous and deliberately different from the concept was considered the right direction to go because it worked for both Batman And another targeted children’s franchise film, Ninja Turtles mutant teenage.
It is difficult to think now, but before Tim Burton BatmanThis is what most people of the world thought when you said, “Batman”.

The same goes for the Turtles, which were the most popular thanks to their series of cartoons very suitable for children.
When these properties made the jump on the big screen at the end of the 20th century, the thought was that more serious sockets on the characters would extend the potential public of older children and adults.
And so, after a two -fed effort to push in the dinosaurs and darken the kingdom of mushrooms, the filmmakers estimated that they had a grip which was worth being transformed into a successful success.
In Super Mario Bros. The meteor that has removed dinosaurs has in fact created two universes: our world and a world where dinosaurs have evolved into humanoid beings that create a cyberpunk city called Dinohattan.
We just start.

Dinohattan is led by fascist president Koopa, played by Dennis Hopper denies. Its plan is to obtain a piece of the meteorite which bursts out of size to merge the two dimensions and the rule on dinosaurs and humanity.
This MacGuffin meteorite is in the hands of Daisy (Samantha Mathis), an orphan of the Dino dimension who turns out to be the daughter of the noble king who was deposited by Koopa and was transferred to a gigantic mushroom which spreads through Dinohattan.
I said it was going to become weird.
Hero

Finally, we have our heroes, Mario and Luigi, the Mario brothers. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo are two unhappy plumbers from Brooklyn who are swept away by Daisy and his adventure in the Dino Dystopia.
Listen, you are an intelligent person, the viewer. At a glance, you can see how lost in the translation Super Mario Bros. Look when you think about what Super Mario Bros. is an idea. So, it is obvious that the whole artistic taking of the film has deactivated the public importantly.
But here is where I am on the side of Super Mario Bros.Because a daring failure is always much more interesting than a safe success. And although the dark science fiction riff Super Mario Bros. Do you never be gold in the box office for this property, I maintain this kind of large artistic oscillations.

David yesterday Suicide team And Josh Trank Fantastic Four are films that I will defend even if they are not good because I appreciate seeing such attempts distinct to this kind of adaptations. But, like these two superhero blockbusters, Super Mario Bros. also had to face an interference studio changing what the film was originally supposed to be.
After having spent sets of pre-production, casting and construction, Disney Buyed the film’s distribution rights and required script changes that have extended everything as much as possible, leaving the film finished with serious tone problems.
Without forgetting that the cast did not learn of these major script changes until they are in North Carolina for filming. Directors Morton and Jankel were so crazy that they wanted to leave production. A number of injuries to the main distribution and other problems have led to extremely controversial production.
But what counts for bean meters is not how horrible your production is or how wild your ideas are. All that matters is green and we are not talking about 1 to mushrooms.
Disaster and redemption

Super Mario Bros. Open in place number four at the box office and struggled to gain just under $ 21 million in the United States against a budget in the range of 40 to 50 million dollars. He managed to make the list of Siskel & Ebert’s worst films that year, so criticism and the public were widely disabled.
For years, Super Mario Bros. was part of the story of the “video game film” as a warning to any other future adaptation.
But then, a fun thing happened.
It turns out that because of its bizarre taking, its tumultuous production and even its possible failure, the fans began to find a lot Super Mario Bros. I saw him as a child and even if I never really liked the film as a story or a trip with interesting characters, I find it deeply intriguing as a cinematographic production.

And I’m not the only one. Super Mario Bros. Acquired a real cult, so much so that a special edition 4K remaster was published, and the collector’s edition that I proudly have a whole book of scripts and a huge book of production and photos.
Super Mario Bros. is one of the most obvious failures in the history of cinema, but it is undeniable that it is a film with a vision. And these kinds of films always manage to find their audience. It may not be the huge type of audience that propels your film to a billion dollars box office, but they are the kind of audience that can find and appreciate the best parts of a failure.
