The new film by Jared Hess “A Minecraft Movie” is a strange duck. It is based on “Minecraft”, the best -selling video game of all time (and we can assume why a cinema studio would like to adapt such a precious IP), but the game is an open sandbox that allows players to exploit and create at their own pace. There are no quests, levels or mythology in the game, and there is no plot to follow. Make a film from “Minecraft” seemed to be a reckless affair, and the idea laughed online before the film’s release. Hess’s only recourse to adapt the equipment was to put real people in the “Minecraft” universe and make his film In a Slapstick comedy. It was enough to win “a film minecraft” $ 163 million in its opening weekend.

The look of “A Minecraft Movie” is also a bit strange. “Minecraft” was designed to look deliberately low, the players taking control of characters in blocks and unrealistic and pushing through a world which is also made of cubes. It was like a 3D rendering of an old 8 -bit game. For “A Minecraft Movie”, the Fantasy Overworld is indeed as cubic and in block as the game, but now had a more realistic textured. Overworld’s natives have disproportionate blocks, but also skin, teeth, lips and eyeballs. Animals in the over-world world have a square and symmetrical appearance, but are also unfortunately biological.
It seems that there was an earlier version of the film – when it was still developed in 2015 – which fake a little more in a naturalist direction. There was a time When Rob Mcelherney headed the projectAnd he threw Steve Carell into a notable role. He also ordered works of art for the film which made the world “Minecraft” a little less in block (but which still displayed enough right angles to be recognizable). Part of the art of this project have been disclosed on Twitter / X by the @MCMOVIEUPDATES account. They look pretty cool.

Entermen looked more like a thin man
One of the most impressive conceptions of 2015 was an Enderman with strange human body forms. The Endermen of the original game “Minecraft” were large, tagged and black monsters with bright purple eyes and a steep approach. In Hess’s latest film, an Enderman is just as rigid and similar to a block, only slightly more “rounded” than in the game. Some of the first works of art, Credited in Will Groebeshows the enterman hidden in the woods as, well, a thin man. Troubling, his hands and forearms are not at all a blockage, but stretched the versions of the realistic human arms. It seems that an accessory of physical and life -size Enderman has also been built, and the blue -eyed monster looks really terrifying. Can you imagine one of those who come to you in a dark alley?

Another physical accessory was a “minecraft” kitten. Like the animals of Hess’s film, the kitten always had square characteristics and eyes, but also fur and more natural mustaches. MCELHENNEY’s conception philosophy seemed to be to make the world “Minecraft” as real as possible. Indeed, some of the works of art on Twitter / X show a large cave, and the cubic forms seem to be more like a natural geological phenomenon than to Hess’s film. One might think of the giant’s road in Ireland, which is made of crossed natural stone.
Kovacs Vance artist Also worked on the 2015 version of “A Minecraft Movie”, and he actually designed a Dragon Ender, a creature that we do not see in the final film. The dragon Ender was also vaguely cubic, but especially because it was made of shale and minerals. Kovacs published his creations for the Dragon Ender On his Car account. These same conceptions show characters in the shape of humanity next to a Steve’s block version as it appears in the games. In Hess’s film, Steve was played by Jack Black live, so it seems that there was also a great conceptual change during development.

The final film was still a success, however. He made $ 163 million in his opening weekend.
